"Stick to Reading = Succeeding" Program is a Real Page Turner for Local Elementary Schools
11/16/2006
by Lochinvar

Students at Carroll-Oakland elementary opened the book for the "Stick To Reading=Succeeding" program for all of Wilson County elementary students on October 25, 2006. Set to run through March 1, 2007, this reading initiative program, developed through a partnership with the Nashville Predators and Lochinvar, kicked-off with a special visit to the elementary school. Attending the kick-off event was the Predators mascot, GNASH, Predators team members Scott Hartnell, Ryan Suter and Shea Weber and Lochinvar's key executives.

Books, Books and More Books

Along with the Predators players participating in the kick-off assembly, they also acted as captains in the school's Spelling Bee Challenge. The students eagerly listened as they explained what the "Stick to Reading=Succeeding” entailed. One aspect, the All-Star Reading Challenge, is an incentive program in which students are rewarded with prizes for reading books. This motivational program is free for all Wilson County elementary schools and their students. Each participant is given a registration form to keep track of the books they have read during the course of the program.

Students will start to receive prizes once they have completed five books. For example, students who read five books will receive a Predators bookmark; after reading 10 books, students receive player trading cards with fun facts about the players; upon reaching 15 books, students receive a Predators poster/certificate, along with a Predators/Lochinvar water bottle and students’ names will be posted on the Predators’ official Web site at www.nashvillepredators.com in April.

The Supporting Characters

As part of the “Stick to Reading=Succeeding” program, GNASH and a Predators' player or broadcaster will make monthly visits (through April) to schools in Wilson County. This visit will reinforce the power of the program and energize the children to start hitting the books.

“By joining with the Predators and their ‘Stick to Reading’ program, we hope not only to encourage, but more importantly, to engage students with the joy and excitement of reading,” said Bill Vallett, Lochinvar president.
