KNIGHT Heating Boiler Recognized by Appliance Design’s 19th Annual Excellence in Design Competition
3/1/2006
by Lochinvar

Lochinvar’s KNIGHT Heating Boiler was awarded a Silver Excellence In Design (EID) award in the HVAC category in Appliance Design magazine’s 19th Annual EID Competition. The product was designed by the engineering research and development division at Lochinvar.

“The purpose of Appliance Design’s annual design competition is to honor those designers who have excelled in meeting the modern challenge of harmoniously melding technology and industrial design,” said Richard Babyak, editor at Appliance Design Magazine.

An independent panel of three industrial design experts performed judging of the entries. Evaluation of the entries was based on four criteria: appearance, human factors, innovation and technical merits. A point scale was used to rank the designs for purposes of determining winners within a category and for naming the Best Overall.

The
KNIGHT scored highly in the innovative design and technical aspect sections. The KNIGHT is available in seven models with inputs from 80-500 MBH and is up to 98 percent energy efficient with whisper quiet operation. It offers a fully modulating burner with 5:1 turndown and a cascading feature that allows multiple boilers to be controlled by one central boiler. The KNIGHT also includes nine features inside the SMART SYSTEM that cost extra in competing models. These features consist of a digital operating control, a two-line 16 character LCD display, password security, a product service indicator, outdoor reset with sensor, system pump control, domestic hot water prioritization with pump control, a boiler circulating pump with control, a zero-10 VDC input control, contacts on any failure and an internal cascading sequencer.

The
KNIGHT also scored high points due to its visually appealing compact size and its user-friendliness. It features a sculpted steel jacket which gives the contractor the ability to provide their customer with professional installation. The top and front panels of the steel jacket remove easily to access the internal components.

The judges noted that the companies behind the honored entries demonstrated that they are serious about industrial design and showed that seriousness by attention to details and innovative approaches that sharply differentiated winning products from their competitors. Another common element found among the recognized products was the ability to make technology more accessible to the user.

The
KNIGHT’s technology is accessible to users because it offers PC software that allows for easy plotting and trending of historical data. The software simplifies maintenance and maximizes efficiency. The KNIGHT also features a compact, lightweight design that makes installation simple and inexpensive.

Photos and descriptions of winners will appear in the May 2006 issue of Appliance Design magazine, in both the print, digital and online versions at www.appliancedesign.com. Appliance Design is a publication of BNP Media, Troy, Mich.
